According to behaviorists, a person learns well if the environment is on their side and this will not distract them from the flaws and focus, this is also beneficial to the teachers as well.
Ms. Sahmalah stated that regardless what they are, facilities also play a crucial role in school and more importantly, for the teaching and learning experience. Even the smallest detail such as basic furniture in classes such as tables, chairs whiteboards and etc are all essential for the students' learning. Recently, she and the primary teachers were discussing whether to place interactive objects on the corners of the tables to accommodate fidgety students and this will surely optimize their learning experience. And also, a teacher must keep anything that is not related to education aside such as personal problems they had beforehand, they must know when and where to cease it so that it will not affect the students later on as they have the ability to notice and thus Ms. Sahmalah believes that well-equipped schools and fully-functioned facilities is to provide for everyone an optimum and conducive environment.
As a teacher, we will be spending most of our time in school and in classes, thus we must "make ourselves at home". Ms. Sahmalah stated that our choice of decoration as well as how we display our classroom will reflect our personality for instance, she is a Star Wars fan and of course there will be some posters and action figures of them. This will not only affect the students (in terms of classroom environment) but also gives the students (and parents) a slight understanding as well as to show that we as teachers are also just like anyone else and perhaps the students would also share the same interest as us too. Ms. Sahmalah makes it a point to make the classroom as welcoming and positive as possible for the students. The desks are arranged in groups to encourage teamwork and group discussion between students. Ms. Sahmalah applauded Nexus that class teachers are given the freedom to decorating their class in whatever way they want for not only themselves but also for the students too, since they have been spending their time with them, the teachers should be able to notice what type of student do they have. Also, there is a Display Policy where students' work will be put on display to encourage and motivate them, the purpose is to make them feel appreciated for their effort and also allows them to compare their own work with others to search for any room for improvement.
Unlike other schools (mostly government), both teachers and students are encouraged to use the school facilities such as the library, swimming pool, P.E hall (a.k.a gymnasium), music room, drama theater, playground and etc. However, there is no ICT and art room as the teachers would incorporate them in the classroom. The students are provided with stationery for their own convenience.
Out of all places in Nexus, Ms. Sahmalah finds her classroom most interesting as of course she is the one who decorated the place and one would take pride in their effort. She claimed that it motivates her just from seeing her blood, sweat and tears on display and certainly it would be contagious to her students as well who felt likewise. On a lighter note, her classroom is very colorful as she is a visual person. Despite all of that, she hoped that the classroom could be bigger for room for a library corner as it currently is small and to top it off, some mini sofas would be nice too so that the students are able to settle themselves down for a book to read. Aside from that, the students are encouraged to work in pairs or groups as this seemed to be the most effective. Ms. Sahmalah emphasized that by doing this, group work promotes teamwork as the students will have to be paired up with people in the future and it certainly helps finishing work more effectively and efficiently. There are multiple structures incorporated in teaching in Nexus such as the Kagan structure where Rally Robin is used by teachers to make sure the students would have even rates of participation and this also engages the students instead of just sitting motionless and just listen to teachers in class such as sharing their ideas and their prior knowledge regarding a topic. Another structure is called the AFL (Assessments for Learning) structure where the students are each given a whiteboard and marker to write out their answers, this is also a very versatile activity, for instance, Mr. Crews would ask the students to solve the Math problems on it and it will also be easier not only for teachers to check on their progress but also for them to erase them off much easier if there are any mistakes,
